The ERDP has already been discussed in Subject 6. During 2000-2006 other sources of funding were available for rural areas through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). European Union Structural funds were only available in certain areas of the the UK. For instance Objective 1 funding was only available in 3 areas in England to promote the development and structural adjustment of regions whose development is lagging behind. Objective 2 funding was also available across wider areas of England, although the majority of this was targeted through the ERDP. LEADER+ was a European Community Initiative for assisting rural communities in improving the quality of life and economic prosperity in their local area. A range of example projects can be found on the Defra Website. This method of delivering money to rural area looks set to continue through the RDPE.
A new programme of ERDF funding from 2007-2013 has now opened administered by the Rural Development Agencies. CLICK HERE for further details of the new programme.
Other funds and advice for businesses in rural areas are available from organisations such as business link. Further Government funding is available for local community and voluntary groups.
